Ninjas,Pirates, and Princesses

It all started in our 8th grade tech class when our teacher asked us what we wanted to do and where we were going to go. As a middle schooler , the answer didn’t come easy. Suddenly, being a pirate, or ninja or a mad scientist didn’t seem like an appropriate thing to make a career out of. So I sat there thinking, and thinking, and thinking, until I finally came up with an answer; I have no clue. So I did what I could to finish the project, and I researched career fields that related to my interests. The only thing I could come up with was an athletic trainer because of how much I loved sports, I figured it would be enjoyable.  I slapped a few Duke Blue Devils stickers on a presentation and turned it in. For the following years when asked what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go I still had no clue. However, I just told everyone that I wanted to be an athletic trainer and go to Duke, it still didn’t seem right. As the years continued panic started setting in as I approached my Junior year because I was told that was the year I needed to decide. I still had know idea but was content to go anywhere for athletic training. It wasn’t until November of that year, my youngest niece had just gone into heart failure and was needing a transplant. To be the supportive little sister I wanted to be, I was at my sister’s side and tried to be there as much as possible.  With the many hours spent in the hospital I began to fall in love with Pediatric Cardiology, it was just simply fascinating and the doctors were nothing short of brilliant. I could’ve picked their brains if there was time. It wasn’t all the awesomeness of pediatric cardiology that helped me decide what I want to do but it was also the want to help and give answers to families that were in the same boat that we were in. I wanted to be able to help them out when needed and provide information when they were uncertain.
